Remme-los Self Help Centre began in 1987/88 with a powerful idea: that people with spinal injuries deserve not just care, but opportunity, independence, and a place to truly belong. Founded by quadriplegics, it was built on lived experience, understanding, and the determination to meet real, everyday needs.

Today, Remme-los Self Help Centre is more than a residence, it is a community. A place where people are supported to discover their strengths, embrace their independence, and live life with purpose. Here, every step toward independence is a step toward a fuller life.

In addition to on-site accommodation, Remme-los Self Help Centre extends its support to individuals living independently or with their families. Through its Independent Living Project, led by Nomthandazo, the centre reaches far beyond its physical location bringing important services directly into our community.

It is estimated that about 5% of the population in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan area lives with a disability. In response, the Independent Living Project (ILC) provides a range of services, including caregiver support, skills development, capacity building, poverty relief, outreach initiatives, and prevention programmes. These efforts are designed to address the real challenges faced by the community, not only supporting individuals with spinal cord injuries, but also empowering their caregivers and families. This holistic approach strengthens their entire support network.

Despite this impact, government funding does not fully cover operational costs. As a result, our self help centre (Remme-Los) and the Independent Living Project (ILC) rely on the generosity of donors to sustain and grow our work.

As a registered non-profit organisation, Remme-Los qualifies as a beneficiary under the B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice. This provides an opportunity for businesses and individuals alike to contribute towards meaningful, lasting change.

Remme-los Self Help Centre is affiliated with the Quadriplegic Association of Gauteng South (QAGS) and its national body the Quad Para Association of South Africa (QASA). It is situated in Primrose, Germiston within the Ekurhuleni Region.
